IHA / RIH Staff leading the way for mental health of young athletes

IHA / RIH  Staff leading the way for mental health of young athletes: Medical team for 2018  BC Winter games has engaged the SJA Therapy dogs to support our vision and legacy of Mental Wellness in athletes.Coordination for this project will be done by Trudie BonBernard & Adrienne Ganton with the medical mental health lead, Kelsey Landsburg, RPN in the RIH ED.

SJA Therapy dogs can attest to the “mood lifting and stress relieving benefits  of having these trained dogs and handlers.  Physical touch of a dog has been proven to calm people and refresh the mind. Holding and petting an animal can release strains and tension, as well as ease feelings of loneliness (SJA.ca)"

Back on Track will be donating a specialized coat to each dog participating in the games, from the generosity of Anneette mcleod.

Supporting the mental  wellness of athletes, coaches, and parents will be the legacy of the BC Winter Games Medical Team. This will be provided by  collaboration with SJA Therapy Dogs, through additional  online resource,  and the availability  of a mental health Nurse  to those participating in the games.

SJA Therapy dogs will be available during the reception of athletes, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, at school dorms, and at the two Special Olympics Venues.

BC Winter Games medical team directors are Sherri Morrish, RN & Dr. Todd Ring.
