The recently concluded Nanaimo 2014 BC Summer Games had a direct economic impact of almost $2 million to the Harbour City and surrounding region.  The study, commissioned by the BC Games Society and completed by the Economic Planning Group of Victoria, BC measured spending by Games organizers, participants, spectators, and volunteers.

“When you have had the opportunity to visit a BC Games event – whether as an athlete, coach, family member or spectator, you can’t help but notice the increased activity beyond the physical achievements of the athletes, in the host community,” said Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. “The sport tourism associated with these events is significant and it’s great to know Nanaimo realized $2 million in economic activity from hosting the 2014 BC Summer Games.”

Spending by BC Summer Games organizers was $821,700, while participants, spectators and volunteers contributed $1,147,000 for a total of $1,968,700.  The majority of that spending was reflected in accommodation and meals by out of town visitors.  During the Games weekend in mid July, area hotels reported being sold out as guests and visitors came to Nanaimo in support of the Games.

“The economic impact from hosting the BC Summer Games is an added bonus,” said Michelle Stilwell, MLA Parksville-Qualicum. ““Whether you’re buying a cup of coffee, checking into a hotel or campsite, or getting a bite to eat, you are contributing to the local economy and leaving lasting legacies in the community.

Statistics from the report include:
•    average spending per person was $96.91
•    48% of all spectators came from off Vancouver Island
•    visitor accommodation accounted for $195,918
•    restaurant meals accounted for $122,160
•    $161,433 was generated in provincial taxes

“Sport tourism is a growing market in BC, and the BC Games are but one contributor to that economic generator, said BC Games Society President and CEO, Kelly Mann.  The Games are about athlete and community development but we do value the economic importance of this multi-sport event as well.”

The Economic Planning Group has conducted previous studies of the BC Winter and BC Summer Games.  Other clients of EPG include BC Place Stadium, the Victoria Marathon, and the BC Resort Industry. The complete report can be viewed at www.bcgames.org
