Maple Ridge – The Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games Board and Legacy Committee are pleased to announce their community legacy. The Province, through the BC Games Society, is providing more than $128,000 to support local sport and community development projects and ensure people will benefit from the city being chosen to host the BC Summer Games.
“I am so pleased the regional legacy projects will continue to provide sport opportunities for athletes,” says Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “We recognize how disappointing the cancellation of the 2020 BC Summer Games was for all the participants, coaches, sport organizations, volunteers and others who worked so hard to prepare for this remarkable sport and community celebration. I can’t wait to cheer on the athletes as they reach for their dreams and make us all proud at the 2024 Summer Games in Maple Ridge.”
Since the City of Maple Ridge was unable to hold the 2020 BC Summer Games due to the pandemic, this commitment of funding will ensure legacy projects can still move forward to support the value of sport across the community. The City of Maple Ridge will be given another opportunity to host in 2024.
“Sporting events are known for bringing people together, fostering community connections and generating significant economic opportunities,” says Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. “These grants put Maple Ridge on the map as a sport event destination as it prepares to host the Summer Games in 2024. Congratulations to all of the recipients.”
Thirteen local non-profit sport, recreation, and community organizations will receive funding for infrastructure, equipment, and training. The projects selected by the Legacy Committee will have a lasting impact on sport and community wellness.

"Although our Games did not take place, our team is proud to leave Maple Ridge in better shape than when we started,” said Tom Bowen, Vice President of the 2020 BC Summer Games and Legacy Committee Chair, “We are excited to see these legacies come to life in the coming years.”
The BC Games are held every two years. Greater Vernon will host the 2022 BC Winter Games and the 2022 BC Summer Games will take place in Prince George.
