There have been a lot of smiles on and off the ice as some Special Olympics Figure Skaters experienced their biggest competition to date. Athletes have said it has been a great experience and the coaches are awesome and help them work through unique struggles, providing a supportive environment.

Kayla Polege is a 2nd year Special Olympic Skater from Zone 4 - Fraser River.  She says it feels like flying and enjoys the spirals best.  She says that while competing can be a bit nerve-racking, the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs that have made visits throughout the games have been an awesome addition.

Kari Trott from Zone 6 - Vancouver Island-Central Coast usually gets nervous when competing, but was ready to take the ice for her first BC Games.  She has loved her time in Fort St. John and encourages people to go outside their comfort zone, “You’re never too old to start figure skating, always believe in yourself.”

Also from Zone 6, Matt MacDonald is 8 years old and had a number of podiums already under his belt. He has previously won a bronze at a competition in Vernon and silver at his most recent meet.  When he isn’t on the ice, he is playing softball or bowling with the Special Olympics team in Port Alberni.  MacDonald loves to get out and be active, he also wants to encourage more young men to give figure skating a chance and join him on the ice.

Head Coach Kailee Bowman has been really happy with the events this weekend, saying it’s really good to promote inclusion in the skating community. “We've accomplished lots of goals and conquered major fears.” Special Olympics Figure Skating helps encourage sportsmanship and determination. The athletes make life-long friends and find a new sense of self-value everyday.
