Making the Games Inclusive For All
The Inclusion Chair for the Logistics Directorate of the Fort St. John 2020 BC Winter Games, Lori Slater, is no stranger to the challenges faced by people of different abilities and is a community advocate for accessibility and inclusivity. She has been working closely with the Winter Games Committee, School District 60 and the City of Fort St. John to ensure that the upcoming games are inclusive for all.
A venue tour of all competition locations was conducted in September 2019 and afterwards a list of recommendations on accessibility and inclusivity was given to the Winter Games Board of Directors.
“The Board of Directors have really embraced the importance of accessibility and inclusion,” says Lori.
Some of the work completed thus far includes upgrading washroom facilities at Dr. Kearney School, creating 4 wheelchair accessible shower stalls, and the procurement of accessible washrooms for all outdoor sports venues.
“If it makes it easier for someone in a wheelchair, it makes it easier for seniors, moms with strollers, delivery people etc.” Lori says. “Economically being accessible and inclusive makes sense for many reasons and can have a long-term benefit for the community.”
But it goes much deeper than just wheelchair accessible washrooms and temporary ramps; volunteers have also been looking at the emergency response plan, paths of travel to, from and within venues and spectator seating. The games committee is also intending to provide signage that is at an appropriate height and includes braille, to ensure that these events are truly inclusive for persons of all abilities.
Slater concluded by saying “Proper planning for athletes with disabilities in our Games will ensure ALL athletes are able to compete at their best and have the experience of their lifetime. In turn the information learned and shared amongst our teams will leave a lasting legacy for people with a disability in our community.”
Volunteers are still needed and must register before February 8, 2020 in order to help during the games!
