Pembina Pipeline Corporation invests $60,000 into the BC Winter Games

Fort St. John, BC – Pembina Pipeline Corporation is investing in the success of our community through a $60,000 sponsorship of the BC Winter Games taking place in Fort St. John from February 20 – 23, 2020. Pembina’s involvement includes co-sponsoring a Winter Cultural Space with the Treaty 8 Tribal Association. The Winter Cultural Space will be a place for Treaty 8 communities to share their culture and traditional knowledge with everyone attending the games. Pembina has also commissioned a commemorative pin for the games, designed by a local Indigenous youth.

“At Pembina, we recognize the importance of these games, not just to the 1700 participants who will be competing, coaching or cheering, but to all of us in Fort St. John who are proud to showcase everything that our region has to offer,” says Jeff Spenst, a supervisor for Pembina, in Fort St. John. The donation from Pembina will be used to fund the 2020 games and will also go towards a community legacy project for the community following the games. The Winter Cultural Space will be open throughout the games for athletes, visitors and residents to attend and learn about local First Nation culture.

In six weeks, Fort St. John will welcome up to 1,200 athletes, 300 coaches and 200 officials to our region. It will take over 2,000 volunteers to make these games happen. Fort St John is the northern most community where the BC Games has ever been hosted and 1984 was the last time Fort St. John hosted them. The economic impact of the 2020 Games is estimated to be approximately $1.6 million for Fort St. John and region. Events are being hosted within the City, the District of Taylor, City of Dawson Creek, and within the Peace River Regional District.
