The countdown is on. February 20th marks one year until the Opening Ceremony of 2020 BC Winter Games in Fort St. John. It has been over 35 years since Fort St. John last hosted the BC Winter Games and the economic impact is estimated to be approximately $1.6-million for the city.

Up to 1,800 volunteers will be responsible for planning and staging the Games, which will see up to 1,200 athletes, 300 coaches, and 200 officials in our city and region from February 20 – 23, 2020.

“This event will further showcase our community’s ability to successfully host large sporting events and provide a lasting legacy for generations to come,” stated Mayor Lori Ackerman.

The BC Winter Games are British Columbia’s biennial celebration of sport and community bringing together British Columbia’s best emerging high performance athletes, trained coaches, and certified officials for four days of competition. This experience is an important development opportunity and stepping stone towards higher level sport competitions.

“The BC Games are truly British Columbia’s games and we take great pride in bringing this event to every corner of the province,” said Alison Noble, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. “We know that the community of Fort St. John will utilize every resource available to stage a remarkable and memorable event for the athletes, coaches, and officials.”

We Are North. The tagline and branding for the 2020 Games is the epitome of Fort St. John, the most northern community in British Columbia to ever host the Games.

Sports will include everything from archery and badminton to speed skating to cross country skiing and alpine skiing.  Beatton Provincial Park ski trails will see significant updates to enhance the facilities prior to hosting these Games.  The Pomeroy Sports Centre in Fort St. John will be the hub location hosting five different sporting events.

"The Fort St John 2020 BC Winter Games Host Society is very excited about organizing and putting these games on. We are all working hard to ensure the athletes have the very best experience possible. These Games are a huge undertaking and Fort St John has a history for great volunteers putting on great events. The Board of Directors looks forward to working with all of our volunteers over the next year, to stage this sporting centerpiece for our Province,” said Darren Snider.

Organizers continue to recruit key volunteers for leadership positions and the general volunteer drive will start up in late spring.
