Many BC Games athletes have the drive and determination to excel outside of sport and Drédyn Fontana is no exception.

Having competed in the Abbotsford 2016 Summer Games running the 800 metres, this Shawnigan Lake high school student is considering volunteer opportunities with this year's Cowichan Games to help other young athletes experience the fun he was able to enjoy.

As it turns out, Drédyn may have another chance at competing at the Summer Games, this time in rowing and in his home town. His mom Candace Fontana, Cowichan Summer Games Volunteer Manager Chair for the Marketing Directorate, is excited to sign up this newest recruit, however Drédyn's love of sport may keep him wearing a competition bib again this year.

“We don’t know yet where he will be volunteering because he may have an opportunity to try out to make the rowing team and compete at the Cowichan Games this summer,” she said. “He recently rowed in the Shawnigan regatta and we had confirmation that he will be competing for Shawnigan at the St. Catharine’s regatta in Ontario at the beginning of June!”

What is Drédyn plan for the Games? He'll find out in June if he will make the Summer Games team. He has made the first cut of 12 out of 31 athletes and will row at Elk Lake on June 10 to go for the top four. Until then, he wants to share important advice for other prospective athletes competing at this year's Summer Games: “Stay hydrated on the day of the event and relax and enjoy the experience!”
