Sun Peaks Resort is hopping this weekend! They are the official hosts for the Kamloops 2018 downhill skiing and snowboard boarding events. The freestyle skiers have been wowing crowds, the alpine athletes are impressing locals with their fast times, and the snowboarders are getting star-treatment as the first-ever snowboarders competing in a BC Winter Games.
There are also a lot of familiar faces hanging out and taking it all in. On Saturday, February 24, our BC Winter Games volunteers found another past Olympian on the slops – Senator Nancy Greene-Raine has been busy inspiring young athletes and cheering on her home team.
BC Winter Games Volunteer: How are you today Nancy?
Nancy Greene-Raine (NGR): Oh great! It was so wonderful to see the action up here, it was just beautiful today.
BCWG: How do you feel about Sun Peaks being the host mountain this year for the Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games?
NGR: It’s been great and we’re very appreciative of the legacy because we didn’t have a start gate for the snowboard cross and the ski cross and now we do so that’s going to be well used. It’s nice to have a legacy like that and we had so many volunteers from our community and from the greater Kamloops area helping out. It was wonderful.
BCWG: Is there anything else that you’re hoping stems from the Games being here at Sun Peaks? NGR: I am hoping that kids got inspired, and it was so much fun to see Elli Terwiel talking to them at the opening ceremonies and to see their faces and then see them today, and you know, that’s a starting point for many of these athletes and for them to know that they can go all the way to the Olympics is just great. I think that’s one of the big legacies.
BCWG: Was there anything else that you wanted to say about the whole event happening in Sun Peaks and Kamloops this weekend?
NGR: You know, I wish I could’ve gotten around to all the events in Kamloops as well and out at Stake Lake because there’s just so much going on. Of course, you can’t go to everything but, you know, it’s a credit to the Tournament Capital of Canada to pull off a big event like this with so much professionalism. It’s just been so slick and so well done so congratulations to everybody.
