On Friday, February 23 Sun Peaks was all abuzz with volunteers, fans, and athletes. Sun Peaks Resort was host of the Moguls events; starting at 10:30AM with the first run, 1PM with the second run, and the medal presentations at 4PM.

Our Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games volunteers had the opportunity to catch up with athletes and proud parents on the hill during the competition.

Freestyle Skier, Jaxon Peters (JP)

BC Winter Games Volunteer: Where are you from?

JP: Cold Stream, BC - near Vernon and Silverstar.

BCWG: How long have you been competing for?

JP: 15 years.

BCWG: What are you competing in this weekend?

JP: I’m competing in slopestyle, moguls and big air!

BCWG: How are you feeling about your runs so far?

JP: Wonderful! I’m stoked to be out here. It’s a great day! We got lots of snow!

Freestyle Skier, Andre Dreyer (AD)

BCWG: Andre, where are you from? How long have you been doing this for?

AD: I’m from Prince George, BC, Tabor Ski Mountain, and we also ski at the Hart ski hill and I’ve been competing for around 5 years.

BCWG: How do you feel about your runs today?

AD: I’m just out here to have fun and have a good time and go, you know, sesh [session] some rails in the park. You know, just out here doing it for the heart, do it for the friends … lapping it with all your friends and your buds and you’re just having a good time.

Personally, I fell in my first run, but that doesn’t matter. I might fall in the next one. Who cares? It’s moguls. I’m just out here to have fun and compete with the boys.

BCWG: I am loving your enthusiasm! Does your positivity help you with your runs?

AD: Positivity helps the most! It is number one priority.

Freestyle Skiier, Dominik Zwiers (DZ)

BCWG: Where are you from?

DZ: I’m from Prince George, BC.

BCWG: How long have you been competing?

DZ: Probably about 5 years.

BCWG: What are you competing in this weekend?

DZ: Freestyle skiing! Moguls, slopestyle and big air.

BCWG: How do you feel about your run today?

DZ: Pretty good, [there are] little things I want to clean up. I’m just going to send it on the next one.

BCWG: What are you thinking for your next run? Have you got any tricks up your sleeve that we might see from you?

DZ: I think I might do a 180 on the bottom air, just hit the bottom of the moguls backwards. Yeah, I’m just going to send it.

Athlete Parent, Katja Roberts (KR)

Katja is Freestyle Skiier, Charlie Roberts’, proud mom. She was at the competition cheering on her son – and she is a Sun Peaks local.

BCWG: Katja, how long have you been living here for?

KR: For 17 years

BCWG: How you do you feel about Sun Peaks being the host mountain this year?

KR: This is super fun. It’s a bit exciting to have Sun Peaks getting this event up here. Everybody is doing a great job and it’s a great event.

BCWG: You said your son Charlie is competing this weekend. What is he competing in?

KR: He’s competing in the freestyle. Today moguls! This is his first BC Winter Games. It’s very exciting.

BCWG: How old is Charlie?

KR: He’s 12.

BCWG: Wow, he must have been young when you strapped on a pair of skis on him!

KR: He started at two and a half years, he’s been skiing ever since and now, I believe he has 74 days on his pass this season.

BCWG: So maybe we’ll be seeing him in future Olympics?

KR: (Laughs) You never know!

Freestyle Skiier, Byron Jackson (BJ)

BCWG: Where are you from?

BJ: I’m from Whistler Blackcomb.

BCWG: What did you compete in today?

BJ: Moguls.

BCWG: Are you competing in anything else this weekend?

BJ: Slopestyle and big air.

BCWG: How do you feel about your runs today?

BJ: Great! I’m very happy with fourth.

BCWG: Awesome, you landed in fourth! Is there anything that you’re going to take from today that you’re going to put into competitions that you’re competing in this weekend?

BJ: Well, I’m going to keep my excitement, my enthusiasm, and hope to do well.

Athlete Parent, Daniel Dellaire

Daniel is Freestyle Skiier, Luc Dellaire’s, proud dad. He was at the competition cheering on his son. The Dellaire’s are also Sun Peaks locals and so excited to be hosting the Kamloops 2018 BC Winter Games.

BCWG: How long has Luc been doing this sport for?

DD: He’s been doing it for about four years now. He’s one of the founding members of the Sun Peaks Freestyle Club.

BCWG: How do you feel about this event being hosted here and your son competing in the events?

DD: It’s great! It’s his second BC Winter Games. He participated two years ago at [age] 11, he’s 13 now. He’s loving it! It’s great to have it here at Sun Peaks because we haven’t hosted any major events in the freestyle categories so it’s great.

Freestyle Skiier, Caden Ferguson (CF)

Caden was the recipient of the silver medal in moguls. His epic runs led him to earning a medal – and his humble nature shows he has what it takes to go far in the future as a competitor and sportsman.

BCWG: How do you feel about your win?

CF: I think its good. It’s a fun time, skiing with all my friends, having a good time.

BCWG: Are you skiing in anything else this weekend?

CF: I’ll be competing in other competitions so, slopestyle and big air.
