Competition gets underway at the 2018 BC Winter Games

It was a winter wonderland in Kamloops today with snow blanketing the city and the mountains.  BC Winter Games action got underway with competition in 19 sports.  After the first day it is the host Zone, Thompson Okanagan who have earned 23 medals.  See the results here...

The BC Games are an important development opportunity for athletes but also for coaches.  Olympic ski cross coach, Sead Causevic's athletes have earned 3 medals in PyeongChang but he got his start at the BC Winter Games.  Read more about the BC Games and ViaSport coach mentorship program

The St. John Ambulance Therapy dogs were out at the sport venues and accommodation sites helping to calm nervous athletes and make them feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Read more...  

We were thrilled to welcome four Directors from the Kamloops 1979 BC Winter Games to the 2018 BC Winter Games and to show them some of the changes in 40 years!  Dale Janowski, Lois Cutler, Jack Hollstedt and Pat O'Brien in turn, brought their Directors jackets to show to show the dignitaries at the Civic Lunch.  See the photo here...

Local sport leader and BC Games alumna, Susan Kabotoff, was presented with the Promotion Plus Leadership Award for her dedication to coaching rugby including pioneering the female rugby program at Norkam Secondary school.  Kabotoff contributions to the sporting community encapsulated the essence of the award – her passion for sport, commitment to volunteering, and focus on her local community. Read more...

Out in the elements today were some of the 1800 volunteers including at Stake Lake, host of cross country skiing.  There was a technical issue with the national anthem but that didn't stop volunteer, Deepa Filatow, from stepping up and leading the athletes, parents, and spectators in the anthem. Video here.
