Jovan Dhaliwal’s win over Daniel Spencer Sunday morning in the 70-kilogram class wasn’t enough to clinch gold but it got him a silver medal for his Vancouver-Coastal – Zone 5 team.
And it helped his team secure a second-round finish over-all in boys and girls wrestling in the BC Summer Games in Abbotsford.
Based on points and the number of gold medals earned, Vancouver Island – Zone 6 came in first place with 89 points.
Zone 6 actually tied with Vancouver Coastal – Zone 5 which had the same number of points but Zone 5 had only three gold medals compared to six golds for Zone 6.
Finishing in third place overall was Fraser Valley – Zone 3
Spencer’s coach Matt Sparling liked the way Spencer fought but it was matter of Dhaliwal racking up too many points too early in the match.
“I was happy with the way he (Spencer) finished the match.” Spencer kept trying to the last second.
Fraser River – Zone 4 finished fourth with 59 points while North West – Zone 7 had 19 points. Cariboo North – Zone 8 finished in sixth place with 13 points and Thompson-Okanagan – Zone 2 had seven points.
Kootenays – Zone 1 didn’t enter a team.
