The Fort St. John Arts Council has put a focus on the 2020 BC Winter Games with this year's street banners program. The banners were designed by Harriet Stanford. One hundred banners were printed and mounted this spring, representing four sports set in a northern context.

“I’ve always enjoyed creating art, but I’ve never done it professionally. Creating these banners gave me a new skillset to work with," Stanford said in a statement.

“There are big skies, northern lights, wind and snow. I wanted to pick lesser represented sports and put them firmly in a northern context."

The Games will be held in Fort St. John from February 20 to 23, 2020. Up to 1,200 athletes are expected to compete in 18 different sports, including archery, badminton, speed skating to cross country skiing, and more.

The Games are expected to generate $1.6 million in economic impacts for the city, the northernmost B.C. community to host the Games. Fort St. John last hosted the Games in 1984.

"The Games are an opportunity for us to showcase our community to the province," Darren Snider, president of the Fort St. John 2020 BC Winter Games Society, said in a statement.  "The Arts Council coming on board with this year's banner design honouring sport is just one more demonstration of our community pulling together."
