The Delta Sports Hall of Fame inducted their 2019 sport champions at a gala banquet on October 26th at the Coast Tsawassen Inn. The Delta Sports Hall of Fame celebrates Delta sport achievement, recognizes excellence, and honours past, present and future sport role models. Among the inductees were BC Games alumnus Rawnie Weststrate, Team BC alumnus Aaron Lattimer, and BC Games and Team BC alumnus Sue Demuynck.
Rawnie competed at the 2016 BC Summer Games in softball and has gone on to become a pitcher for the Delta Heat ’01 softball team who won a silver medal at the 2016 Canada Cup, gold at the U16 provincial and national champions in 2017, bronze at the 2019 U19 Provincial Championships and gold at the 2019 USSA Western National Championships. She has been named to the final roster for the junior national team going to the WBSC Americas U17 Women’s Softball qualifier in Colombia. She also coaches through 140 Sports and her Delta Heat ‘01 team won the 2016 Delta Youth Rotary Helping Hand Award for all of their volunteer work.
Sue was the team manager for Team BC women’s field hockey at the 2005 and 2007 Canada Winter Games and coached girl’s field hockey at the 2010 BC Summer Games. She has volunteered with Field Hockey BC for over forty years and has won many awards, including the 2017 Field Hockey BC award for event management, the 2018 Field Hockey BC award for governance support and the 2019 Sport BC President’s Award. Of all of them, she is most proud of winning the 1994 Barb Schrodt Award, presented to someone who has made a difference in women’s field hockey in B.C. Sue is still active as a tournament technical official.
Aaron competed at the 2013 Canada Summer Games for Team BC in rowing and carried on to compete for UBC and the Canadian National Team. He placed fourth at the 2018 World Championship in Bulgaria, setting the fastest Canadian Lightweight Men’s Skulls time and sixth in the LM1x at the World Rowing Championships in Austria. He also holds the Canadian record in Lightweight ergometer testing for the 10,000 metres, the world record for 6,000 metres, and the world record for the one-hour ergometer test distance of 17,850. He is currently training with the Canadian Olympic Team for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
Each year, the Hall of Fame holds a gala banquet to honour past and present inductees - athletes, coaches and volunteers who have demonstrated outstanding performance. Dr. Jack Taunton, co-founder of the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Clinic and chief medical officer at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games, was the guest speaker for the event.
