BC Games alumnus Evan Dunfee won bronze for the 50 km race walk at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships, qualifying him for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Evan is Canada’s first ever medalist in the men’s 50 km race walk which took place in Doha, Qatar, on September 28th, his 29th birthday. In an attempt to beat the heat, the race walk started one minute before midnight and finished in the early morning. Still, temperatures reached 32 degrees with 75 per cent humidity. Evan utilized all 74 water stations along the way, a hydrating strategy which he credits to his victory.
Evan competed in the Abbotsford 2004 BC Summer Games and is an avid spokesperson for the BC Games Society. He also competed on Team BC at the 2007 Canada Games and at the 2016 Olympics. Getting another chance at an Olympic medal, Evan is now training for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics that will take place in August. Athletes have been warned of the heat and humidity of Tokyo summers, which can reach 35 degrees or higher, with 80 percent humidity or more. After his successful hydration strategy in Doha, Evan should be well prepared to keep a cool head so he can focus on a podium finish once more.
