"While the BC Games Society's expertise lies in delivering multi-sport events, we rely on our partner Disabled Sport Organizations (DSOs) and Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) to provide sport-technical expertise," said BC Games Society President and CEO Alison Noble, "The partnerships with the sport organizations are essential to the success of the Games and valued by our organization."
Sports in the Games are led by DSO/PSOs that have demonstrated their commitment to athlete development, coaching certification, and officials’ training through the Games. Sport-specific technical packages outline eligibility criteria for athletes and coaches, competition details (such as events and rules), as well as team composition.
As many as 1220 athletes, 370 coaches, and 240 officials will compete in the 2022 BC Winter Games in 17 sports - alpine skiing, archery, artistic gymnastics, badminton, biathlon, cross country skiing, curling, diving, figure skating, freestyle skiing, judo, karate, ringette, rhythmic gymnastics, snowboarding, speed skating, and wheelchair basketball.
The BC Games Society has made it a priority to provide competitive opportunities for athletes with a disability and indigenous athletes. Athletes with a disability will compete in cross country skiing, figure skating, speed skating, and wheelchair basketball. Following the success of a pilot program in 2018 to increase opportunities for indigenous athletes, the BC Games Society and the Indigenous Sport and Recreation Council (I•SPARC) will work together to identify new opportunities for indigenous participation at the 2022 BC Winter Games.
The BC Games provide a valuable multi-sport competitive opportunity for young athletes and are the first step on the path to national and international success. At the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, 22 BC Games alumni were part of the Canadian team including gold medalists Kelsey Serwa (Ski Cross) and Justin Kripps (bobsleigh).
It is through the strength of the provincial sport system and the support of communities around the province that the BC Games Society is able to continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.
The Greater Vernon 2022 BC Winter Games will take place February 24-27.
