Countdown to 2022 BC Summer Games begins

In exactly one year, Prince George will welcome up to 3,761 participants (2808 athletes, 565 coaches and 388 officials) for the 32nd BC Summer Games. For three days, the city will be alive with high performance athletic activity as youth aged 10 – 18 participate in 18 sports (including sports for athletes with a disability).

“The Games provide an opportunity to showcase our community, our venues and our people,” says Prince George Host Society President Renee McCloskey. “We are honoured to welcome BC’s best young athletes to Prince George, and we are working hard to give them an exceptional experience they will never forget.”

Prince George hosted the BC Winter Games in 1981, the BC Summer Games in 1990, the Canada Winter Games in 2015 and the World Paranordic Games in 2019.

McCloskey is joined by Vice President Selen Alpay and a Board of 17 Directors for the 2022 BC Summer Games, working to coordinate approximately 70 volunteer Chairs, each of whom has a committee of volunteers and are responsible for different aspects of the Games planning and operation. In total, an estimated 3,000+ volunteers will be involved in planning and staging the Games. Volunteer recruitment will begin in early 2022.

“Prince George will deliver an excellent BC Summer Games in July 2022,” says Alison Noble, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. “The hosting history, dedicated volunteers and exceptional venues provide the best ingredients for success.”

The BC Summer Games provides a competitive multi-sport environment that supports the development of athletes, coaches, and officials as they move on to higher levels of competition. The BC Games contribute to the development of sport and communities through infrastructure updates and improvements, volunteer engagement and skill enhancement, and large-event hosting experience. The expected economic impact for the host community will be approximately $2 million.

“Every BC Games host community sets the goal of having the best event ever,” says Prince George Host Society Vice President Selen Alpay, “and with the event hosting experience of our community volunteers and northern spirit within the City of Prince George, we know that athletes, coaches, cheering fans and families will feel welcome and supported as they compete at their very best in 2022.”
