Girls 3x3 Basketball Final

Kylia Schellenberg didn’t expect to be in the final of the three-on-three girls basketball tournament at the 2022 Prince George BC Games, but she came through when it counted.

With the score tied and the clocked ticking under two minutes, the Zone 3 Fraser Valley athlete drove to the basket, making the shot and drawing a foul in the process. She sunk the free throw to give her team a 12-10 lead over Zone 6 Vancouver Island-Central Coast, a lead they’d never relinquish winning 14-10.

“I was really needing to get to the hoop on that play,” she said. “I needed to power through and get what I could get.”

The key sequence came moments after Schellenberg hit another free throw to tie the game. Right after connecting on the hoop and harm, Schellenberg drove again, but this time kicked it out to a teammate who made the insurance shot.

“Honestly, I didn’t think we’d get this far,” she said moments after the final whistle. “I’m just super happy. We were so good as a team, and we worked our butts off this weekend.”

Zone 4 Fraser River 2 won the bronze medal.

Schellenberg enjoyed the Games experience, playing with some of her schoolmates on the Chilliwack-based team. They also got to check out some of the other events taking place across the city.

“It was fun, we got to go see beach volleyball and meet people from other sports,” she said. “It was a good experience.”
